Custom Vision Packages at Lusk Eye Specialists
At Lusk Eye Specialists, we think every patient deserves the chance to have 20/20 vision after cataract surgery. That’s why our cataract surgery team, led by James E. Lusk, M.D., and his two sons, Bryan E. Lusk, M.D., and Jeffrey D. Lusk, M.D., combines pioneering surgical experience and expertise with some of the most advanced intraocular lenses (IOLs) on the market. With our help, virtually any patient can reduce, or in many cases eliminate, their need to wear glasses after cataract surgery.
We offer a selection of vision packages comprised of a wide range of lens technologies and functionality and we take the time to explain all of your options to you before your surgery. That’s how we find the solution that meets your needs. That’s the Lusk Difference.
The Importance of Having Options for Post-Cataract Lenses
While “good vision” is the overall goal for anyone undergoing surgery, each patient is also going to have their own unique set of visual needs and preferences. Some people desire precision vision seeing at a distance. Others prioritize seeing clearly while driving at night. Some patients have astigmatism (irregular shaped cornea) and would benefit from a vision package that includes a special lens to correct this problem. Whatever your particular circumstance, during your preoperative consultation, your Lusk surgeon and staff will conduct precise measurements of your eyes and ask you questions about your lifestyle in order to recommend a vision package that’s customized to meet your specific needs.
Lusk Eye Specialists is proud to offer unique vision packages that can dramatically improve your vision after surgery. There are several advanced technology lenses you may want to consider. Your eye surgeon will help you select the lens that gives you your best chance at clear vision. Here are some of the most popular cataract IOLs that your Lusk cataract surgeon may discuss with you.
Toric Lenses for Astigmatism
Most astigmatism in the eye is located in your cornea, the clear, dome-shaped front window located over your pupil. When you have astigmatism, your cornea is shaped like a football rather than a round symmetrical dome like a basketball. This results in blurred or double vision.
Although small amounts of astigmatism can sometimes be corrected with precise incisions made during your surgery, the best astigmatism correction is achieved with a toric lens. Toric IOLs usually eliminate the need for people to wear glasses to see in the distance, but you’ll still need to wear “readers” for near tasks unless you choose a multifocal toric lens in your vision package.
Multifocal Vision Packages
We offer several vision packages that feature multifocal lenses, each with its own unique benefits:
AcrySof® IQ PanOptix® Trifocal Lens
This PanOptix lens can correct mild to advanced astigmatism. The advantage of this lens is its ability to give distance, midrange, and near vision simultaneously. Although it was only released into the US market by the FDA in late 2019, it has been used as the primary multifocal IOL in Europe for over 6 years. Some patients report seeing a reduction in contrast or ring shadows around lights at night with this lens.
TECNIS Symfony®
The Symfony lens offers the best contrast and a seamless, extended depth of focus. It too can create night rings, sometimes giving off the appearance of a cobweb. With the Symfony, all patients see well at intermediate distances, but some don’t achieve the near vision they could with the Panoptix. This lens is particularly suitable for patients who have had prior LASIK or RK surgery where other multifocal lenses may create glare.
Wavefront-Corrected Lenses
Some patients will benefit from lenses that correct for their corneal shape. Our corneas have imperfections that may cause wavefront errors that distort vision. Wavefront-corrected lenses are often a good choice for patients with larger pupils.
TECNIS® Multifocal
For those that desire enhanced near vision, the TECNIS may be a good option. Some patients complain about grainy vision in low-light situations and nighttime halos with this lens.
Bausch + Lomb® Crystalens®
The Crystalens is marketed as a near-vision lens. In most patients, it provides clear intermediate or “computer distance” vision, but is not sufficient for reading. One advantage is that Crystalens often provides excellent distance vision and is more forgiving of corneal abnormalities caused by dry eye or a previous LASIK procedure.
