Hyperopia (Farsightedness) Treatment in Shreveport, LA
Hyperopia, also known as farsightedness, is among the most common vision problems in the world. People with hyperopia can see objects in the distance clearly, while objects up-close appear blurry and unfocused.
Hyperopia is a refractive vision issue, one of a set of conditions that makes eyesight blurry at certain distances. Other refractive vision issues are myopia (nearsightedness), astigmatism, and presbyopia.
What Causes Hyperopia (Farsightedness)?
When the eye is working properly, both the cornea (the front layer of the eye) and the lens (the clear, flexible tissue behind the pupil) are responsible for focusing light. This light is aimed at the retina, the structure in the back of the eye that sends images to the brain.
In some eyes, the cornea is too flat or the eye is too short which prevents light from focusing directly on the retina. These issues are the refractive vision issues, or “refractive errors,” we mentioned above. Hyperopia is the refractive vision issue caused by light being unable come into full focus by the time it reaches the retina.
Hyperopia can either be the result of a cornea that lacks sufficient curvature, or the lens becoming less flexible with age. Hyperopia caused by an inflexible lens is called presbyopia.
The Problem in a Nutshell:
- Near vision is unfocused
- Distance vision is working normally
- The cornea is too flat, or the lens isn’t as flexible as it should be
